More reading is the first step
Sometimes I find the Reading Wars a bit silly. Everybody is fighting about this or that. It's either the Science of Reading or Balanced Literacy. It's either nonfiction or fiction. It’s shorter texts or whole books.
For me, all of that fighting is pointless unless we answer this question first: Is there enough reading going on in the first place?
In other words: Are students reading for a significant amount of time — every day, and in every classroom?
